Taiwan's Executive Yuan has approved a digital infrastructure program to build a digital economy that is expected to reach an annual output of NT$6.5 trillion (US$204.3 billion; US$1= NT$31.82) by 2025, reported the Commercial Times on November 25. The so-called DIGI+ program will invest around NT$170 billion (US$5.3 billion) in total between 2017 and 2025, aiming to cover 80% of the population with digital daily-life services and 90% of the population with fixed-line broadband Internet that reaches 2Gbps download speed in 2025. Instead of focusing on hardware, the program will lean towards the development of software applications, with goals to attain a 45%-to-55% ratio between software and hardware investments by 2025. The DIGI+ program will set aside NT$11 billion in 2017 and an annual budget of NT$20 billion from 2018 to 2025.
